Email from Dave Brown, 31-Oct-2009:
"Even with all the heavy equipment working out at the wetlands site... these 6 American Avocets came in and started feeding about 4 days ago...not sure if they left today or not. They stand around 45cm tall... beautiful birds even in their winter plumage of black and white. This is another example of why this project is important. This species is uncommon at the best of times along the shorelines of the Great Lakes (its a western bird....nevermind inland at West Perth)."
Follow-up from Dave Brown, 11-Nov-2009:
"American Avocets were last seen at the Mitchell Sewage Lagoons back in 1987. One was first sighted on Aug 23 by John Miles, then another report was made on Sept 16 by Robert Miller (doesn't say how many)."
