What is GEOCACHING?

by "Sierra Divine"

Geocaching is a high-tech scavenger hunt using a global positioning system or GPS coordinates. There are over 400,000 caches hidden worldwide. The caches are posted on the website www.geocaching.com.

To start geocaching, you will need a GPS, a gadget which can be purchased for $100 and up. Then you go on the website and login. If you enter your postal code, you will have access to all the caches in the surrounding area and their coordinates. They can be small micros or larger multi caches. They are usually in plastic waterproof boxes containing small dollar store items, a log book and pencil. Using your GPS will lead you to within 20 ft. of the cache. You still need to find it. Some are very well hidden. When you find it, you log in the date, and your user name along with any comments you would like to make pertaining to the cache. If you take something out, you must put something in. Then you put the cache back where you found it for someone else to find. Once back home, you login and report that you visited the cache.

There are also items that can be tracked - travelbugs and geocoins. These have registered numbers on them so the owner can track them as they travel around the world.

The multi caches may have a micro (a film canister or small container) with the coordinates to the larger cache. Some have puzzles, problems or mathematical equations that have to be solved to acquire the coordinates.

Members are e-mailed weekly with a list of the new caches in your area and also gatherings for cachers. For more information visit the website www.geocaching.com.

PS - Who thought you could have this much fun with a billion dollar military expenditure? We plan to place additional caches in the area.
